Have Two of my Favorite Shows Jumped the Shark?

Watching the currents seasons of two of my favorite shows, Heroes and Grey’s Anatomy, has been slightly painful at times. I’m not entirely sure what the writers are thinking, or if it’s just me, but the more I see of the current seasons the less I want to keep watching.

Let’s start with Heroes. My basic problem is that it does not seem as if anything new actually happens. Someone sees the future or goes into the future, sees bad things are going to happen, goes back to the present day and try to fix it, tells others about what is to come, someone betrays someone with the information, and ultimately something gets “fixed” only to have something else bad happen in the future again. It’s been like that for three seasons. This, coupled with that fact that there are quite possibly too many characters, and the show just seems like a mess. Rumors are that the next half season of the show (the next “Chapter”) is going to be better, but I think that’s what they said about this current Chapter. The show still has potential to be better, but if the writers don’t change things up a bit from what they’ve been doing, I cannot see this show lasting as long as it could. Even now the ratings are down. Hopefully they can pull things together in January.

Grey’s Anatomy has gotten on my bad side for a different reason: Izzy is sleeping with the ghost of her dead boyfriend. When this was first introduced, since I had read that Izzy was going to have a brain tumor causing her to hallucinate, I did not really think anything of it. She was just seeing him around everywhere she went. But, then they started talking to each other and ultimately they had sex with each other. This was a bit much for me mainly because it came off to me as more creepy than romantic. Now I’ve read that Izzy will not have any sort of brain tumor, which leaves me wondering how the writers will explain Izzy having sex with a ghost. When I see a scene with those two, I cringe. Grey’s has touched on supernatural subjects before, like when Meredith died for a bit in the third season and was with the ghosts of her mom as well as Izzy’s boyfriend. In that context, it made sense. What they are doing now, however, does not. Bringing back the ghost of the old boyfriend is also taking away from a possibly better story involving Izzy and Alex; something that can be more real than Izzy and a ghost. Maybe they’ll surprise me and make it all work, but right now I’m doubting that will be the case.

With this talk of disappointment, I may as well mention one show that has not disappointed me, and that is Gossip Girl. I just finished watching the first season that I received as a birthday present and I am completely hooked! Granted, it was only the first season, but it was good enough to make me use my remaining iTunes money to get a Season Pass for the second season. I’m really hoping that I won’t be disappointed with it like I have been with Heroes and Grey’s Anatomy. Guess I’ll find out soon enough.
